CNAF Gasket Sheet

Compressed non-asbestos fibre (CNAF) gasket sheet is the most widely used flat gasket material in industrial sealing. A CNAF sheet is made by calendering reinforcing fibres (typically para-aramid) with an elastomer binder and inorganic fillers into a dense, compressible sheet. The binder type determines the primary chemical and temperature resistance — NBR for general oil and fuel service, EPDM for steam and hot water, FKM for aggressive chemicals, and so on. We stock CNAF from Klinger, Garlock, Donit, and Topchem across all major binder types.

DIN EN 1514-1 (gaskets for flanges with PN designations)BS 7531 (rubber-bonded compressed asbestos-free fibre jointing)DIN 28091-2 (compressed-fibre gasket sheet — material classification)DIN 3535-6 (gas leak rate test method)ASTM F104 (line-callout classification of non-metallic gasket materials)ASTM F36 (compressibility and recovery)ASTM F152 (tensile strength)TA Luft VDI 2440 (low-emission flange grades — select Klinger / Garlock products)

Common Applications

  • General industrial flange gaskets
  • Water, steam, and oil service
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • HVAC and building services pipework
  • Pumps, valves, and heat exchangers
  • Compressor cylinder head gaskets
  • Marine engine and auxiliary systems
  • Power generation plant
  • Refrigeration systems (CR-bound grades)
  • Food and pharmaceutical service (PTFE-filled grades)

Not Recommended For

  • Not suited to strong oxidisers like chlorine, bleach, or peroxide. Use glass fibre CNAF for oxidiser service.
  • Maximum pressure and temperature depend on the specific binder and grade, so always consult the data sheet
  • Creep relaxation increases with temperature. Retorque may be required on high-temperature joints.
  • Not a substitute for flexible graphite or spiral wound gaskets in extreme temperature service above ~430 °C — even inorganic-fibre CNAF grades are intermittent-rated only at the upper end

NBR-Bound: Klingersil C4430

Aramid/NBR sheet formulated for oil, gas, and hydrocarbon service with enhanced blowout resistance at higher pressures.

NBR-Bound: Klingersil C7400

Universal aramid/NBR sheet with balanced properties across water, steam, hydrocarbons, and refrigerants.

NBR-Bound: Garlock Blue-Gard 3000

Garlock's general-purpose aramid/NBR sheet. Blue colour. Continuous -73 to 205 °C, 70 bar. ABS marine and BS 7531 Grade Y approved. Suited to water, oils, gasoline, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The standard NBR Blue-Gard for fuel, oil, and general industrial flange service.

NBR-Bound: Garlock Style 2500 (AS/NZS 4020 Potable Water)

Aramid/NBR sheet originally certified to AS/NZS 4020-2005 for contact with drinking water to 40 °C — the Australian-specific differentiator in the Garlock range. Confirm current AS/NZS 4020:2018 (Amd 1:2022) certification status with the manufacturer before specification, as 4020-2005 reports are no longer valid post-1 May 2024. Suited to municipal water treatment, potable water reticulation, and installations governed by the Australian drinking water standard.

NBR-Bound: Garlock Style 2950 (Green)

Aramid/NBR sheet for water, oils, gasoline, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The green-coloured companion to Style 2900 (black). Compressibility 8% per ASTM F36; continuous service to 205 °C and 83 bar.

Controlled-Swell: Garlock Multi-Swell 3760

Aramid/NBR sheet engineered to swell on contact with both water and hydrocarbons, recovering bolt load and improving sealability on damaged or pitted flanges. Garlock 3760-U is NSF/ANSI 61 + 372 certified for potable water; the Style 3760 Nuclear variant is qualified to 10 CFR 50 Appendix B. Used in refinery, petrochemical, water treatment, and remedial sealing on damaged or out-of-spec flanges.

NBR-Bound: Tesnit BA-U / BA-50 / BA-R

Donit's universal, standard, and general-purpose aramid/NBR range covering the full spectrum of general industrial sealing.

NBR-Bound: Topchem 2000 / 2003 / 2005

General purpose through to premium aramid/NBR grades. The 2005 offers superior stress retention for critical chemical processing joints.

SBR-Bound CNAF

Styrene-butadiene rubber binder with aramid fibre. Economy alternative to NBR-bound grades. Better hot water and steam condensate performance but lower oil resistance. Suited to water treatment, HVAC, and steam condensate lines.

SBR-Bound: Garlock Blue-Gard 3200 / 3400

Aramid/SBR Blue-Gard grades for water and saturated steam service. The 3200 (off-white) is ABS marine and MIL-DTL-24696 Type II approved; the 3400 (gray-black) shares similar properties. Both rated -73 to 205 °C continuous and 83 bar. Steam-capable with adequate compression (min 4800 psi assembly stress).

EPDM-Bound CNAF

EPDM elastomer binder with aramid fibre. Superior hot water and steam resistance compared to NBR, with improved ozone and weathering tolerance. The preferred binder for water treatment, HVAC, and outdoor steam service. Not suited to oils or fuels.

EPDM-Bound: Garlock Blue-Gard 3700

Aramid/EPDM Blue-Gard grade with enhanced chemical resistance to mild chemicals compared to NBR/SBR variants. Continuous -73 to 205 °C, 83 bar. Higher creep relaxation (25%) than other Blue-Gard products. Designed for stable mild-chemical service rather than sustained high bolt-load applications.

CR-Bound (Neoprene) CNAF

Neoprene binder providing the widest media compatibility of the standard rubber-bound CNAF family. Good resistance to refrigerants, moderate oils, and weathering. Used in marine, refrigeration, and general chemical applications.

FKM-Bound CNAF

Fluoroelastomer binder with inorganic fibre reinforcement. Extends CNAF service to concentrated acids, aromatic solvents, and aggressive chemicals where standard NBR grades fail. Higher continuous temperature rating than NBR or EPDM binders.

Silicone-Bound CNAF

Silicone elastomer binder for high-temperature steam, glycol, and organic solvent service. Maintains sealing performance across a very wide temperature range including sub-zero applications. Not suited to hydrocarbon oils.

PTFE-Filled CNAF

CNAF sheet with PTFE or PTFE/silica filler system providing near-universal chemical resistance and FDA compliance. Combines the handleability and bolt-load retention of CNAF with the chemical inertness of PTFE. Used in food, pharmaceutical, and aggressive chemical service.

High-Temp Inorganic Mineral Fibre CNAF

Inorganic mineral fibre reinforcement (not aramid) with high-temperature binder system. Continuous service above 250 °C, up to 400 °C+. Used in exhaust systems, furnace connections, and high-temperature process equipment where organic-fibre CNAF binders degrade.

Inorganic Fibre: Garlock Style 5500

Inorganic fibre/NBR sheet rated to 288 °C continuous and 427 °C intermittent. Bridges the temperature gap between aramid Blue-Gard grades (205 °C) and carbon-fibre Style 9450 (302 °C). Pressure rated to 83 bar. ABS marine approved and Fire Safe rated. Suited to saturated steam, refrigerants, water, oils, gasoline, and aliphatic hydrocarbons in high-temperature service.
